“CBD will get you high.”
“CBD is just snake oil.”
“You will get arrested for having CBD.”
Ever heard something like this when the topic of CBD comes up? So have I and it just indicates how much education on CBD is still needed in the general public. On today’s blog, we tackle 4 of the most common CBD myths that get espoused repeatedly and show you why they are not true.
Myth #1: CBD Will Get you High
CBD is extracted from the hemp plant. Hemp falls under the same species of plant (Cannabis) as Marijuana. Because of this relationship, ‘CBD will get you high’ is probably the biggest misconception I hear about CBD. Nothing could be further from the truth!
By federal law, CBD can only contain up to 0.3% THC (the compound responsible for the high) and many CBD brands, including Golden Legacy, contain zero THC. Zero THC products are known as broad-spectrum. CBD by itself has no psychoactive properties so you will not feel high.
Now, if you’re buying CBD from the gas station or liquor store, places that don’t provide access to lab tests to tell you what’s in your CBD, all bets are off. However, even in those cases, it’s more likely the CBD products will contain less CBD (if any) than indicated on the bottle rather than a high dose of THC.
Myth #2: CBD Is Just Hype
Even with the rising popularity of CBD as an alternative wellness option, CBD is still relatively new to many people. Part of this is because of its association with marijuana and part is just the newness of the market.
As with any new product that makes sweeping health claims, it’s understandable for many people to write it off as snake oil or a fad. Honestly, I don’t blame people for thinking this way. In a rush to make a buck, many CBD companies make outlandish health claims, claims like CBD can cure cancer or reverse diabetes. This is insane and paints all CBD brands in a bad light. I’ve said it many times before and I’ll say it again: CBD is not a miracle cure-all!
But, CBD is not hype either. It is a natural plant extract that many people can testify to being helpful for reducing pain/inflammation, better quality sleep and decreasing stress and anxiety. These are common problems, not life-threatening conditions, that regular people struggle with every day (including me!). The plus with CBD is it’s not addictive nor contains harmful side effects like the many prescription medications that are prescribed for theses same ailments.
Myth #3: CBD Is Illegal
Out of the common CBD myths, the legality of CBD is the one losing the most luster. This is due to the prevalence of CBD stores popping up in urban and rural cities alike. Kind of hard for something to be illegal when you can build a store and sell CBD in plain sight, right?
Just to be clear, CBD’s status as federally illegal was lifted with the passing of the Farm Bill in December 2018. CBD is legal in all 50 states to possess and grow (except South Dakota, but that will likely change soon). So if anyone tells you CBD is illegal, just tell them about the Farm Bill.
Myth #4: CBD is Harmful
This myth has been propagated by the fact that the FDA continues to put out warnings about potential hazards of the CBD, while dragging their feet to implement standard regulations. Yes, CBD that comes from overseas or has been grown in toxic soil full of pesticides and heavy metals can be harmful (this is why we never recommend purchasing CBD from businesses that don’t provide a Certificate of Analysis showing your products lab-test results). At the same time, the FDA approves numerous harmful food additives that have been proven to be detrimental to our long term health. They can’t have it both ways.
CBD that has been grown in quality soil following organic growing methods has never been proven to have any long-lasting harmful effects. I’ve even given it to my 7-month old without issue to help with sleep when dealing with an ear infection. The most common side effect reported is drowsiness, which pales in comparison to the list of side effects from FDA approved drugs you see when watching the nightly news.
